School Counseling Program
"School counselors design and deliver comprehensive school counseling programs that promote student achievement. These programs are comprehensive in scope, preventive in design and developmental in nature."
The ASCA National Model outlined several tenets that should be utilized to implement a successful school counseling program. The school counseling program must be provided by a state-credentialed school counselor, the school counseling program is based on decision making that is data-driven, the program is delivered to all students systematically, the school counselor identifies the skills and knowledge that all students will obtain as a result of a comprehensive k-12 school counseling program. Most importantly, the school counseling program provides equitable access to a rigorous education for all students. Equity in the school counseling program means that services are provided to students based on their personal needs with an emphasis on the promotion of diversity and culturally responsive services. Effective school counseling programs require collaboration between the school counselor, other educators, and parents to create an environment that promotes student achievement. School counselors should value diversity and promote individual differences in schools. Additionally, schools counselors use their leadership skills, collaboration and advocacy to promote systemic change and help all students succeed. To successfully implement this, school counselors should have abilities and skills, knowledge and attitudes that enable them to organize, implement and evaluate a comprehensive school counseling program that reflects the components of the ASCA National Model.
